Fox in the Snow

Today’s cover of The New Yorker. What is to become of the Republican Party in the upcoming elections? Nobody looks particularly promising. The whole thing really is kind of a circus. But, none of the candidates seem to be able to stay afloat.

First Date, Randy Ortiz

This was shared with me by a friend. It is a pretty good illustration to go with a spiritual experience I had with a deer that used to live across the street from me. He was shot by some kids, illegally, with a 22 caliber rifle in the backside. The wound wasn’t bad enough to kill him immediately. But over time, infection creeped in and eventually took over his haunches to the point that he could no longer get up out of the hollows, at which point, he just kind of laid down and died.
Over the course of the next year, I watched his body slowly decompose. And, when everything was pretty well dried out and done stinking, I went down with a knife and cut off the head.
As I stood over his body, I felt as if he and I were sharing a moment. He seemed to say to me, “It’s alright. Take my head. Use it for something. It will only rot and decay here in this hollow.” I really felt as if he were giving his head to me. We had known each other for quite a while. I watched him grow to be a young buck over the few years he was alive. And, that experience was really something I will never forget.
